Abstract

The article deals with the history of the Soviet genetics discussion that led to the defeat of genetics and the victory of the so-called "Michurinist agrobiology" at the notorious 1948 meeting of VASKhNIL. Analyzing the phenomenon of Michurinism, I explore the problem of instrumentalization of scientific knowledge during late Stalinism, with a focus on the relationship between "theory" and "practice" in Soviet biology and agricultural science.
