Abstract

The role of mathematical modeling for developing an understanding of the structure and dynamics of ecological systems of various spatiotemporal scales is discussed. Statistical, analytical and simulation models are considered. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of the Canadian researcher Evelyn Chrystalla Pielou (1924–2016) in the development of mathematical ecology. It is stated that modern mathematical ecology is an inter- disciplinary field that includes all kinds of methods of mathematical and computer description of ecological systems
