From a dwelling space to a memorial one: P.K. Kozlov Memorial Apartment Museum
Full text (PDF)Abstract
The article summarizes the history of the P.K. Kozlov Memorial Apartment Museum and
the Group for the History of CentralAsia Exploration at the SPbB IHST RAS in the context
of preserving historical memory of this outstanding Russian explorer. It is shown that the
museum is one of the few memorial objects (apartments, houses) and the only academic
museum dedicated to a geographer. The road to turning the apartment into a museum
took more than half a century from the death of P.K. Kozlov (1863–1935) although
authentic furniture and Kozlov’s heritage were preserved thanks to the efforts of E.V. Kozlova and I.A. Chetyrkina. Throughout the 20th century, the apartment remained the home
of scientific clerisy. The organization and opening of the museum became an important
milestone in preserving historical memory of Russian scientists.
