The First Issue of Journal des Sсavans and the Origin of Scientific Periodicals

The paper contains a Russian translation of the preface to the first issue of Journal des
sgavans, the first scientific periodical published in 1665 and edited by Denis de Sallo, a
French magistrate and erudite. The preface is considered as a plan for an editorialproject.
Our commentaries follow the order ofthe points in the preface: (1) book reviews were the
main focus ofthejournal; (2) de Sallo also intended to publish obituaries and (3) scientific
articles, and (4) to maintain and publish scientific communications; 5) journal periodicity
and discussions.
