The Work of the USSR Academy of Sciences’ Division of Technical Sciences during the War

The article analyzes the work of the Technical Sciences Division (TSD) of the USSR
Academy of Sciences during the Great Patriotic War. The scope of its activities covered
the following areas: tackling war-related tasks; mobilizing industry and transport re
sources and reserves for defense needs; finding substitutes for severely deficient fuels
and metals; developing new technological processes and enhancing existing production
processes; and addressing the problems of restoring national economy destroyed by the
War. Based on the documents from the Russian Academy of Sciences Archive and on
published sources, we have identified the main results of the research and practical work
conducted by the TSD scientific organizations and scientists, which had a significant im
pact on strengthening the state’s defense capability and addressing the problems of the
home front.
