Full text (PDF)Abstract
The scientific work of the humanities scholars in 1941–1945 was not only subordinated to wartime needs but was also conducted within the framework of traditional research practices that became established before the war. An example of this is two articles by N.V. Pigulevskaya, a Byzantinist and Syriologist from Leningrad, which are published here: "Soviet Oriental Studies in the days of the Patriotic War" and "A session of the Division of Literature and Language". The first of these articles is tentatively dated to the first half of 1944, the second, to the period from 22 September 1943 to 28 December 1943. With typical wartime rhetoric present in these articles, the author aims to demonstrate the active work of the orientalists and philologists in those difficult times.
